My How Spring Has Sprung

Yup, Oliver Perez is a distant memory.  The Mets now have 25 roster spots, not like last season when it was 24 + 1.  (Where have I heard that before? Hmmmmm.)  First day of spring, and it sprung in a hurry didn’t it?  Birds are singing, flowers are blooming, and Oliver Perez is unemployed.  Happy spring.

Lament all you want about paying him $12 million to do nothing.  Doing nothing is an upgrade over what Oliver was doing, which was crushing my soul.  I’ll take nothing.

Also, I’ve gotta say I absolutely love the conspiracy theory that Jim Riggleman pinch hitting right Jeff Frazier to face Ollie rather than sticking with Matt Stairs was somehow set up by Terry Collins to make sure Oliver failed.  I’m not sure I believe it, but I love that it’s out there.  If it’s that easy to make Perez fail (and let’s face it, managers are going to pinch hit righties against lefty specialists in the real world), then did anyone really need to set that up?

Unlike Castillo, who has at least a small chance to help his new team (and a large chance to murder us because that’s how these things go), heaven help any team who signs Perez and gives him a major league roster spot.  And please, please throw him against the Mets.  Please.
