NCHC Hockey: It’s Pretty Good

Looking back to 2011, when the NCHC was forming, the founding institutions envisioned a hockey conference of like-minded institutions under the principles of overall institutional commitment to Division I hockey, a high level of competitiveness. It would appear that after two seasons of hockey, the NCHC is on task.

Is the NCHC a super conference?

This season, NCHC has six teams in the NCAA tourney (75 percent of their teams) thanks to their non-conference record. As the NCHC learned last season, non-conference games are crucial when the field for the NCAA tournament is selected.

The last couple of days, I have been reading online and there are a number of fans and writers that are upset that their favorite team didn’t make the NCAA tournament. So, when I see fans grumbling about their team not making the NCAA tourney, we can simply point to the inter-conference records.

Taking a look at the inter-conference records, the NCHC’s out of conference record was (53-25-4, 671). Coming in second was Hockey East (62-43-9, 583). The WCHA was the third best league (30-29-9, .507). Rounding out the field, ECAC was fourth (46-50-9, .481), the Big Ten fifth (37-43-7, .471), and finally Atlantic Hockey was sixth (12-51-4, .209).
