Number One In Da Hood? Gee!

It takes a special kind of pitching performance and a special kind of major league debut to get me to use a title for a second time.  But there it was.  A no-hitter through five innings, two hits through seven, and an RBI single for his first major league hit.  And I was skeptical.

 

Wait a second, I’m always skeptical.

 

The best we fans can hope for in a season like this is to not have to see a game where you actually feel pretty good about it only to have it go straight to hell.  That’s probably what drove me crazy during last season’s Washington road trip where Frankie had to go get slammed by Justin Maxwell in the ninth.  So when the tying run came up in the ninth against Hisanori Takahashi, I immediately felt sorry for any Met fan that made the trip to D.C. because I had been there.  And that ninth inning was starting to look really familiar.

 

Thankfully, Maxwell was nowhere to be found.

 

So it’s one game.  One hell of a game for Dillon Gee mind you, but one game.  Still, and it’s probably a non-sequitor since Gee might not see another start this season, but if Gee impresses enough in spring training to be a starter, and the Mets are looking to open up a rotation spot for him, then I would be a little worried if I was Mike Pelfrey.  If the Mets aren’t going to open up the wallets to improve the team, and they’re against trading from the core of Wright and Reyes, then trading Pelfrey, who Dan Warthen said likes to go to “la-la land“, might be an option simply because he has some value, and the current regime seems to be down on him a little bit.  Now that might mean squat if Warthen is one of the ones let go, but given the pitching staff’s success he might survive.  And when a guy says you like to go to “la-la land”, and your manager, lame ducky though he might be, calls you “an enigma”, that sounds a little bit like frustration to me.  So if Warthen has any say in the matter, who knows if this will come up?

 

Remember, it’s just speculation.  Irresponsible speculation.  Really irresponsible speculation.  And like I said, it means nothing if a whole new staff is in and Warthen doesn’t survive.  But, the Mets have given themselves precious few options for the off-season.  This might be one of them.
