Greetings, Mets fans! When we last spoke, the Mets were in the hunt for a National League Wild Card spot. Since then, those hopes have been flushed down the toilet along with any dream of finishing this season with a respectable place in the standings. Now, it seems like a matter of days before the rival Phillies catch up to us in the standings.
The latest Mets loss came to the Miami Marlins and Jose Reyes’ 25-game hitting streak. Jon Niese (8-6) got the nod for New York against Wade LeBlanc (1-1) of Miami. Niese ran into trouble in the top of the fourth inning. After back-to-back-to-back singles, a sacrifice fly, another single, and a double, the Marlins had built a quick four-run lead.
Jose Reyes’ single in the top of the fourth inning extended his aforementioned hitting streak to 25 consecutive games. Reyes, the reinging NL batting champ, is batting just .287 on the season for the Marlins, who are now 50-60.
The Mets stormed back in the bottom of the fifth, but came up short. Daniel Murphy led off the inning with a solo homerun to cut the Miami lead to three. After a pitching change and two quick outs, Jason Bay, Ike Davis, and Andres Torres singled, resulting in another Mets’ run and runners on first and second. After a wild pitch and a walk to Josh Thole, New York had loaded the bases. Jon Niese took a long look into the dugout and strutted to the plate. Not surprisingly, Niese struck out on three pitches and put an end to the Mets’ rally.
Terry Collins’ decision to NOT send a pinch-hitter to the plate with the bases loaded really puzzles me. Sure, we’re like a million games back in the division, but still… YOU PLAY, TO WIN, THE GAME. Isn’t that right, Herm Edwards?
The Mets are now 13.5 GB in the division and 9.5 GB in the Wild Card. It looks like a long-shot to make the playoffs as of right now.
I suggest you all do what I did:
- Start finding other television shows that are on at the same time as the game. Flip between the game and these shows. It will make the frequent losses a lot less painful; personally, I’m a fan of Destination Truth, but with the season finale arriving in less than a week, I’ll have to find something else to watch.
- Stop expecting the Mets to do anything. Seriously, it was fun back in April, May, and a little bit of June. Now, it’s just getting old.
- If you’re not into football, start getting into it. The pre-season is just getting under way and there’s plenty of time to research a team and buy a t-shirt. My new theory on the Mets: Go Seahawks!
