Oilers Release 18 Players from Camp

The Edmonton Oilers have just announced that they have just assigned 18 players to the OKC Barons or their respective junior teams. There aren’t really a lot of surprises here, as we’ve known all along that the most of these guys had no chance to make the NHL squad.

The Cuts

G – Tyler Bunz, gone to OKC. He’d better do something to impress down on the farm or this will be his last year as Oiler property.

G – Franz Tuohimma, OKC. Didn’t look overly impressive at rookie camp but has a chance to fight for the back up role in OKC, most likely ends up in Bakersfield this year.

G – Keven Bouchard, Val D’or (QMJHL). Likely starter for the Quebec league champions this season.

F – Mitch Holmberg, OKC. Very good offensive abilities, will go fight for a top six role with the Barons.

F – Kellen Jones, OKC. Two way player, has a chance to play bottom six and on the PK this season on the farm.

F- Connor Jones, OKC. Brother of Kellen and similar roles, will be behind Khaira, and Yakimov on the depth chart, 4th line center most likely.

F – Matthew Ford, OKC. Can score at the AHL level, depth top six guy in Oklahoma.

F – Josh Winquist, OKC. Another high scoring winger in junior who will try and make a name for himself in the minors.

F- Greg Chase, Calgary (WHL). Offensively gifted winger with an additude, there’s lots of potential in this guy. Might get a chance with team Canada at the World Juniors.

F – Kyle Platzer, Owen Sound (OHL). Not sure where Platzer is going to fit in going forward, he’s a long shot at best.

F- Jackson Houck, Vancouver (WHL). Decent sized winger, needs to improve his juniors numbers or risk slipping down the depth chart.

F – Marco Roy, Quebec (QMJHL). I like this kid but he needs to stay healthy this season for sure.

D – Graeme Craig, OKC. First year pro will fight for time in OKC. Another possible ECHL player here.

D – Alex Krushelnyski, OKC. Invited to rookie camp, good sign that he wasn’t released outright, playing for an AHL deal.

D – CJ Ludwig, OKC. First year pro on an AHL deal, should get a chance in OKC.

D – Ben Betker, Everett (WHL). Big defenseman with potential sent back for his final year of junior hockey.

D – Connor Bolland, Peterborough (OHL). Defensive defenseman with size, we’ll see him again next year.

D – Jordan Rowley, UofA (CWUAA). Long shot from the UofA Golden Bears, nice to have a try out and may get a pro contract somewhere after this season.

All in all no real surprises. Vladimir Tkachev wasn’t on this list and he’ll get a chance tomorrow night to play with Draisaitl and Pouliout, then we’ll see if he’s offered a contract and send back to junior. The Oilers are now down to 47 men in camp if you include the release of Baltisberger yesterday, I would expect more cuts as early as Thursday.
