Another prospect, another contract. The Edmonton Oilers officially announced on Sunday afternoon that the team has agreed to terms with F Kyle Platzer on a three-year entry level deal. The deal will take effect on July 1st, but in the mean time Platzer has agreed to an ATO with the AHL’s Oklahoma City Barons. He’ll be eligible to play the rest of the regular season, and the playoffs for OKC.
Platzer, along with Leon Draisaitl, will add some depth to the center position within the organization next season. Draisaitl is much better offensively, and is likely to be a second line center, while Platzer is more of a depth center, a solid bottom-six guy if you will.
He’s a two-way hockey player that has a bit of a scoring touch to his game, someone that can put up some points but also do all the little things right. Platzer isn’t big, only 5’11” and 182 pounds, but he’s willing to throw his body around and get to the dirty areas.
Platzer had a career year this year, scoring 34 goals and adding 47 assists for 81 points, leading the Owen Sound Attack to a playoff appearance in the OHL, where they went one and done.
Platzer, evident by the boxcars, does have the ability to score a bit, but it’s not going to be the thing that gets him a career at the NHL level. His ability to couple his offensive game with a strong defensive game is what has got him to this point, and is what will get him through this entry level deal.
Platzer will play the rest of the year for the Barons, and will then likely spend the whole season in the AHL with the Bakersfield Condors next season, adjusting to the pro game. He’ll join Bogdan Yakimov, and likely Leon Draisaitl down the middle.
The fourth round pick has played himself into the conversation as a prospect of note in Edmonton, which is another good check mark for the Oilers’ amateur scouting department.
