Oilers Sunday Night Links

As we approach the final stretch of August, it’s time to start taking a look at the roster and the possible training camp battles that lay ahead. The odds of another major move happening decrease everyday, and the group you see is likely the one you will get on October 12th.

Training camp invites and low risk free agent signings are always possible, in fact I’d label them as likely for the club, but they won’t be moving the needle to much on this roster. For better or worse, the majority of the Oilers roster is set for 2016-17.

Without further ado, here are this week’s links.

Never Tell Me The Odds: With training camp just over a month away, Lowetide gives out some odds for each player in the organization when it comes to making the team out of camp. The core group is pretty well surrounded, but some of the depth players and end of roster options might surprise you.

Expectations For McDavid: Connor McDavid was expected to have a great rookie season and he delivered. His 2016-17 season is expected to be even better, perhaps even the best in the NHL. Is that realistic? What can we actually expect from the franchise forward? Robin Brownlee looks into that over at OilersNation.

A Look at Benson: Tyler Benson, a first round talent in the 2016 draft, slid to Edmonton at the start of the second round this past June. Is the oft-injured forward truly an impact level prospect? What kind of style can Oiler fans expect from him? Sammi Silber over at Oil on Whyte profiles the forward.

A Reason to Believe: Anton Lander had a miserable 2015-16 season with the Edmonton Oilers. Offensively, Lander wasn’t just the worst Oiler, he was one of the worst forwards in the entire NHL. There is much doubt that he will be able to bounce back this season, but Sunil Agnihotri believes there may be a few reasons for optimism. He covers those over at the CoppernBlue.

Compliments From Corey: The newest Oiler defender, Adam Larsson, will certainly be missed by his former goaltender, Corey Schneider of the Devils. Schneider told NJ.com the he appreciated the style Larsson played, among other things. David Staples of the Cult of Hockey blog takes a look at the quote and breaks it down.
