The busy portion of the Oilers off-season is now behind us with the expansion draft, the entry draft and free agency’s opening day all having passed. The Oilers have made a number of moves to set their roster and yesterday added ample depth to set the roster in Bakersfield.
Are the Oilers done? Personally, I don’t think they are, but I don’t think we will see anything happen with the NHL club until the Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl contracts are completed. When that happens is anyone’s guess at this point.
While we wait for those two moves to break, let’s take a spin around the Oilogosphere for a look back at the week that was.
The Bakersfield Seven: The Oilers added seven players to the system yesterday that should help the AHL club in Bakersfield. Lowetide takes a look at the new additions and projects what the Condors’ depth chart could look like come opening night.
Farewell, Dave Semenko: Earlier this week, legendary tough guy and former Oiler Dave Semenko sadly passed away after a battle with cancer. Corey Travers of Copper and Blue takes a look back at Semenko’s fabled career in the NHL.
McDavid’s Mega Deal: It appears that the Oilers and Connor McDavid are closing in on an eight-year contract extension worth $13.25 million per season. Some people believe that is far too large of an AAV for a player in today’s game, but Rob Soria of The Hockey Writers believes that this deal is a bargain.
Draisaitl Battle: The Leon Draisaitl negotiations appear to be more stressful than anticipated and a battle could be brewing. Is trading Draisaitl an option for the Oilers? According to GM Peter Chiarelli, not a chance. David Staples of the Cult of Hockey blog has more.
Change, Change, Change: How has the Edmonton Oilers’ depth chart changed since the club lost game seven to the Ducks in mid-May? Jonathan Willis over at OilersNation takes an in-depth look at the organizational depth chart as we pass the opening day of free agency.
