Oilers Sunday Night Links

Another week gone means we are one week closer to the NHL entry draft in Buffalo and the start of silly season in hockey. As it currently stands, we are 12 days away from the first major event of the off-season in terms of player movement.

With us being so close to the draft, the rumors have begun to really pick up. This week, we discovered some interesting things that help set the table for what could happen in the next little while.

Without further ado, here are this week’s top links from around the Oilers blogging community, along with a bonus NHL one.

Shattenkirk, Faulk out of the mix: Oilers insider Bob Stauffer tweeted out during the week that he believes both of these options are no longer available to the Oilers. Oil on Whyte’s Sammi Silber explains why they are no longer options for the team and takes an in-depth look at what that means for the Oilers moving forward.

Oilers will court Lucic as a UFA: Milan Lucic still has not re-signed with the Los Angeles Kings after his debut season with the club. If the NHL’s premiere power forward hits the open market, you can expect the Oilers to be after him. Edmonton has many connections with Lucic and Milan has talked about the possibility. Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal has more on the topic.

Should Edmonton court Lucic?: We know the Oilers will court Lucic, but should they? David Staples of the Cult of Hockey blog over at the Journal gives his take on the possibility.

Copper and Blue make their pick: The guys over at The Copper and Blue got a chance to play GM of the Edmonton Oilers and selected fourth overall for the team in SBNation’s annual NHL mock draft. Did the guys go with the popular pick in Matthew Tkachuk, or did they decide to select someone else?

Reliving Round Three: Here at The Oilers Rig, I’ve been looking at select games from the 2006 Stanley Cup run that the Oilers went on. Over at OilersNation, Lowetide has been looking at the run a series at a time. This week, he took a look at the Western Conference Final between Edmonton and the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.

Goodbye, Mr. Hockey: Gordie Howe passed away early on Friday morning. One of the best hockey players of all-time and one of the best guys in the game. Howe will always be one of the biggest names this sport has ever seen. NHL.com does an excellent job of capturing just who Howe was in this featured piece.
