Oilers Sunday Night Links

KG3box

It’s that time of week again folks, Sunday night links time! We actually got some news this past week, albeit not great news for the Oilers. James Wisniewski, often discussed as the top defensive option remaining, signed a PTO with the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday.

This week will also see another bit of news drop, but it likely won’t see the Oilers involved. Jimmy Vesey, prized NCAA free agent, officially hits the market tomorrow. My money? Vesey signs with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Without further ado, let’s take a spin around the Oilers blogosphere.

Larsson Against Different Levels: Adam Larsson has been billed as a top pairing, shut-down defender for the Edmonton Oilers. Is that an accurate description of the player and what he will bring to town? Will Larsson actually succeed against the toughest opposition available? Sunil Agnihotri looks at Larsson’s results against all levels of competition in New Jersey over at the CoppernBlue.

Building Up: Peter Chiarelli inherited a good young core in Boston back in 2006. He built Boston’s defense and supporting cast and helped that team win a Stanley Cup. In Edmonton, Chiarelli also inherited a strong young core, but can he build around this group? Jonathan Willis of OilersNation looks at Chia’s additions in Boston and how he may build Edmonton’s supporting cast and defense up.

McDavid’s Rank: Connor McDavid was ranked as the 13th best forward in the NHL by NHL Network in their top 20 countdown recently. Where should McDavid have been ranked on this list? Matt Henderson dives into the question over at Hockeybuzz.

Powerplay Concern?: Should we be concerned about Edmonton’s powerplay heading into the 2016-17 season? After all, the team failed to add a shot from the point this summer. Over at Beer League Heroes, the man himself goes in-depth on the powerplay unit and tells you if concern is needed.

Three Scoring Lines?: Could the Edmonton Oilers, thanks to their wealth of skilled centers, actually be able to run three scoring lines this season? Rob Soria of The Hockey Writers takes a look at that and gives us a glimpse of just how good Connor McDavid is.

A Friendly Reminder: Hockey season is creepy up on us folks! It’s already the middle of August, meaning camps are about five weeks away and the World Cup of Hockey just before that. With little down time remaining, we here at the Oilers Rig begin our Just Who Is series tomorrow morning. Be sure to check back in daily for an in-depth look at the newest members of the Oilers
