Yesterday Stauffer dropped this bomb on Oilers Now:
[The defenceman the Oilers might acquire] could be a player no one has mentioned. Could be an organization looking for some scoring. Could be a player no one has mentioned. We’ll see.
Today Stauffer added a few more clues. Putting them all together, I’m fairly convinced that the mystery defenceman is Adam Larsson.
Clue #1: The mystery defenceman is on a team “looking for some scoring.” The Devils were last in goal scoring last season.
Clue #2: The mystery defenceman is “a player no one has mentioned.” Larsson hasn’t been mentioned as a target.
Clue #3: The mystery defenceman is a right shot. Larsson is a right shot.
Clue #4: The mystery defenceman played “22 minutes a night.” Larsson played 22:31 last season.
Clue #5: The mystery defenceman makes $5 million or less. Larsson’s cap hit is $4.16 million.
Clue #6: The mystery defenceman does not have elite offensive numbers. Larsson had 3 goals and 15 assists last season. That’s not elite.
Edit: PaperDesigner added another clue in the comment section below.
Case closed?
Edit: I should probably add that Stauffer saying this might happen doesn’t mean it’s likely to happen. Chiarelli has been more stealth in his move than his predecessors in Edmonton. What I do think we can safely say is that Chiarelli is looking high and low for a right shot defenceman.
