Okay, today’s article is going to be a little bit all over the place. It won’t have a ton of in-depth content, because honestly it’s a Saturday in late July and, well you know the drill. Check out Thursday night’s piece on the Oilers center position for your dose of Oiler analysis: http://www.theoilersrig.com/2013/07/25/centers-of-attention/
Podcast Coming!!!: I’m so so so excited to announce that the Oilers Rig will be getting it’s very own podcast hosted by yours truly, Alex Thomas! I’ll be joined by Oilers fan Jeremy Thompson on every episode. Dave Gordon from oilonwhyte.com will be a regular contributor to the program as well, and I’m very excited to be launching this.
The podcast will run roughly twice a week for the rest of the summer, and will go to three times a week during the entire NHL regular season, and hopefully the playoffs if the Oilers can get there.
The podcast will cover all things Oilers, from off-season reviews, to speculative topics, debates and even guests from the media and Oilers blogging community.
Please tune in to the podcast and feel free to pass the word on via twitter, Facebook and so on! Tell your friends too!
This is something very unique to a hockey blog, and we all hope that this podcast takes the Oilers Rig to the next level in the blogging world for Edmonton Oilers fans. Again, very excited about this!
New Writer: Quickly, I’d like to introduce Jeremy Thompson to the site. Jeremy will join on as my co-host for The Oilers Rig Podcast, and will be a contributing writer. His knowledge as a hockey fan and passion for the Oilers is apparent, and I’ve been very impressed with his visions for the site and his drive.
I’m very excited to work with Jeremy, and I’m sure you will all love his work! Be sure to follow him on twitter @JThompson2380!
Welcome aboard Jeremy!
Ex-Oilers To USA Hall: A few former Edmonton Oilers were inducted to the USA Hockey Hall of Fame this week, and I absolutely think it is worth it to mention this. Former captain, center and arguably the best Oiler post-dynasty, Doug Weight and former teammate Bill Guerin were announced earlier this week as two of the newest members.
Weight was traded to Edmonton during the 1992-93 season for veteran Esa Tikkanen, and he would play eight and a half seasons with the Oil. Doug scored his career high 104 points during the 95-96 season, and led Edmonton to five straight playoff appearances during his career in Edmonton. Doug served as captain from 1999-2001, and was a major part of those hard-working Edmonton teams.
Guerin came to Edmonton mid-way through the 1997-98 season from New Jersey as part of a deal that sent Jason Arnott to the Devils. Guerin would play a huge role in the Oilers upset of the Colorado Avalanche in the first round that year, and would become a premier power-forward in Edmonton.
He scored 30 goals in 98-99, and would be a major force with Doug Weight and Ryan Smyth. Guerin was traded to Boston for Anson Carter and a first round pick, which ended up being Ales Hemsky, in 2001.
Both of these players were key parts of some very hard working Oilers teams that fans were always proud of. They always got into the playoffs, and while they rarely did damage, they still fought till the bitter end each spring.
Congrats to both players, and personally I hope Weight’s number 39 gets retired in Edmonton one day. He deserves it.
I’ll be back tomorrow with more, most likely a look at the Oilers defensive situation and who are the favorites to make the starting lineup come October 1st. The dog-days of summer are here my friends. Also, if you have any suggestions or ideas for blogs, I’d love to hear them! Always want to put up interesting content!
