On December 6th, Sportsnet commentator Mark Spector penned a piece entitled, “How Kris Russell is defying his analytics critics.” It was a mildly controversial signing for Oiler GM Perter Chiarelli over the summer given Russell’s struggles to win over the advanced-stats community. However, most fans seemed okay with the signing since the contract was only for one season and had no long term salary cap im
plications. That was before last week when the Oilers’ GM indicated he would be open to signing the rearguard to an extension. Advanced statistics are important for a growing number of fans while they can cause others to want to pop their eyeballs out with a spoon. There doesn’t appear to be a happy middle ground.
