One of my favourite reads in the Oilogosphere is David Staples over at the Cult of Hockey. On Tuesday he posted a response to an, “Editor in Leaf,” blog post by Nicholas Frost entitled, “Toronto Maple Leafs: Auston Matthews is better than McDavid.” Back in October I wrote,
Out east there is a player who will forever be compared to McDavid. After Auston Matthews scored 4 goals in his first game comparisons to McDavid begun in earnest. Mario Lemieux played in the east and after about 1985 there were some who would debate whether or not it was he, rather than Wayne Gretzky, who was hockey’s best player. Again it is early but you can see how a similar debate may form if McDavid and Matthews continue to excel. If this is the case it is a very exciting time to be a fan.
These comparisons were to be expected. What do you think? Do Matthew’s physical dimensions put him ahead of McDavid? Does Connor McDavid’s offensive prowess trump all other discussions? Obviously having this poll posted on an Oilers’ blog will lead to bias, but how do you feel about the comparison?
Which brings us to today’s poll question:
