I want to mention one more thing about Citi Field’s new dimensions. The following are actual quotes regarding ballpark dimensions. Your job is to figure out who said them. First one:
“I saw four home runs today. The other team didn’t seem to have a problem.”
Second one:
“If we’re going to start complaining about the size of this ballpark now, we just might as well pack it in and go home. Because if we don’t, they’re going to be putting us in a little white jacket and carrying us out of here.”
So who said them? Was it:
- Terry Collins
- David Wright
- Jon Niese
I’ll give you a hint: The Washington Nationals, who hit 31 home runs at Citi Field to the Mets’ six during a stretch, were involved. Play the music if you need to think about it …
Okay. The big reveal. The author of those quotes:
None of the above.
The first quote was penned by Tony Tavares, while he was the President of the Nationals. The second quote was by then Nationals manager Frank Robinson. The quotes came after the opposing team hit three home runs in the first inning and four during the game in a 13-4 loss. The team that hit them? Your 2006 N.L. East Champion New York Mets. Carlos Beltran, David Wright, Cliff Floyd, and Carlos Delgado hit the home runs. The quotes came in response to Nationals second baseman Jose Vidro complaining about the dimensions of spacious RFK Stadium:
“It killed us last year, and it’s going to kill us again this year. The organization didn’t really look deep into it last year. They saw what happened, and they didn’t change anything. So I guess they didn’t care about it, and it’s going to hurt us again this year. I guarantee you … This is not by any means a major league ballpark. This is a — you could call this an airplane field. This is not baseball-type dimensions.”
Sound familiar?
The lesson: Get the players. The rest takes care of itself.
