This Friday night at the Clare Drake the National Champion University of Alberta Golden Bears play their home opener versus Mount Royal. This is game one of a home and home with their southern rivals this weekend.
The Golden Bears opened the season as the number 1 ranked team in the country ahead of the University of New Brunswick, Saint Mary’s, and the University of Saskatchewan.
On the road to start the the season, the Golden Bears remain undefeated in regulation with a 3-0-1 record. The U of A is coming off a two game weekend sweep of the University of Regina. The scores were 9-2 and 6-1 for the Bears and the combined shot count was 119-53 over six periods of play.
Veteran Jordon Hickmott has had a great start to the season picking up 3 goals and 7 points in four games. He is currently tied for sixth nationally in scoring and tied for first in the Canada West with Tyler Fiddler of Mount Royal (1 goal, 6 assists) and Andrew Johnson of Saskatchewan. Hickmott’s scoring prowess should come as no surprise to local fans as the fifth year Golden Bear had 19 goals and 40 points in 28 games last season. He also managed a 28 goal/66 point season for the Edmonton Oil Kings back during in 2010-11.
Another 5th year Bear and WHL alumni, Levko Koper, has also had a great start. He has posted 2 goals and 6 points in 4 games.
Luke Siemens is in his third season in the crease for the Golden Bears after taking over the starting job this year for graduated Kurtis Mucha. He has looked solid picking up 3 wins and an overtime loss to go along with a 1.44 GAA and 0.945 save percentage.
The Mount Royal Cougars sit fourth in the Canada West with a 2-1-1 record. Expect a tougher test than what was offered by the flat-landers from Regina who sit last in the division and own a 1-3-0 record.
The Golden Bears home opener goes Friday at the Clare Drake (on the U of A campus) at 7:00pm. The second half of the home-and-home will be played in Calgary on Saturday at 6:00pm at the Flames Community Arenas.
The Return of Bears Post game live from Rich’s garage
After the Golden Bear’s preseason game versus the NAIT Ooks a few weeks ago, my season ticket partner and I recorded a Bears post game show and uploaded it to the Rig’s Sound Cloud. Tens of people listened to it, so we thought we’d do it again as we will for most of the Bears’ Friday night home games this season. We talk Golden Bears, Oilers, and whatever comes to mind.
Rich is actually in the process of building us a new studio for the post-game show as he awaits the completion of his new house. Our square footage will triple at some point during the season as his new garage will be a three car man cave.
