Report: 49ers re-sign Vance McDonald for five years, $35 million

San Francisco 49ers v Arizona Cardinals

The San Francisco 49ers have agreed to a contract extension with tight end Vance McDonald.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, McDonald signed a five-year, $35 million deal with the 49ers on Friday night. The extension includes $16 million in guarantees.

A second-round pick of the 49ers in 2013, McDonald has enjoyed his best season in the NFL in 2016. The 6’4″ tight end has caught 24 passes for 391 yards and four touchdowns over 10 games, and his average catch of 16.3 yards ranks second among tight ends.

The 49ers confirmed Schefter’s report in an official statement, which included general manager Trent Baalke’s comments on the extension:

“Vance has shown consistent growth throughout his four-year career and his production this season is the result of his dedication and hard work. We believe he has only scratched the surface of what he will be able to accomplish in his career. Vance is a tremendous ambassador for the 49ers, and his passion for helping others provides a wonderful example for this organization. We look forward to his continued contributions to this organization, both on and off the field.”

The deal will keep McDonald, 27, in San Francisco through the 2021 season.
