The New York Mets’ medical staff has recommended shoulder surgery for outfielder Michael Conforto, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports. Conforto, who injured the shoulder while swinging a bat against Arizona starter Robbie Ray on August 24th, suffered a dislocation and torn posterior capsule in the process. The procedure would require a 4 to 6 month rehab process, meaning there’s a possibility Conforto won’t be ready for the start of spring training. Conforto is seeking a second opinion on his injury, but the odds of an improved outlook for him remain slim.
With surgery on the table, the Mets now face the possibility that Conforto could miss part of next season as well. That could change the team’s offseason plans, making a slugging outfielder a bigger priority than originally anticipated. A reunion with either Jay Bruce or Curtis Granderson could provide the Mets with some insurance, but they are stuck in limbo until Conforto’s situation is resolved. The Mets should have some idea of how he is progressing before the start of free agency, but the likelihood of shoulder surgery and the rare nature of Conforto’s injury has the team heading into murky waters.
