REPORT: Oilers Sign Mitch Callahan

The Edmonton Oilers have reportedly signed another forward this afternoon. According to Regan Bartel, voice of the WHL’s Kelowna Rockets, the club has signed veteran Mitch Callahan to a two-year contract.

Callahan played last season with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL, scoring 16-27-43 in 66 games. Callahan added 6-10-16 in 19 playoff games en route to a Calder Cup Championship. Callahan also appeared in four games with the Red Wings, failing to register a point.

The 6 feet, 195 pound forward is a right-shot who plays on the right wing. As you may recall, right winger Ty Rattie was also signed earlier in the afternoon.

As for where Callahan fits, it’s almost certainly on the AHL roster. This is a strong veteran for Bakersfield who should help the Condors compete and mentor the young players. I don’t think he’s a factor for the NHL club, but he does provide good depth for the organization.

The Scouting Report:

ASSETS:
Plays a feisty, abrasive style and works very hard when he’s on the ice. Is at his best when he’s throwing his body around and being generally disruptive.
FLAWS:
Has a choppy skating style that limits his effectiveness at the National Hockey League level. Also, he’s not a natural point producer in the professional ranks.
CAREER POTENTIAL:
Depth energy winger.
