The Oilers have added another defender to the system. According to Mark Spector of Sportsnet, the Oilers have signed Ryan Stanton to a two-year, two-way contract. The deal will play Stanton $700,000 at the NHL level and $300,000 in the AHL.

Stanton has played in 120 career NHL games, scoring 4-23-27 in stints with Washington, Vancouver and Chicago. His most recent NHL stint was a one game cameo with the Capitals during the 2015-16 season. Last year, he split the season between San Antonio and Cleveland of the AHL, scoring 2-10-12 in 48 contests.
We should expect the left-shot defender to start the season in Bakersfield and be a top call-up option with Dillon Simpson for the Oilers. The 27-year old is not an established NHL’er, but he could fill in for a game or two and be adequate for the team.
His value will come at the AHL level, where he should be able to provide steady play and help mentor young defenders like Ethan Bear, Caleb Jones and Ryan Mantha.
