REPORT: Oilers Sign Ty Rattie

According to TSN’s Ryan Rishaug, the Edmonton Oilers have made their first signing of the free agent period, adding former St. Louis and Carolina winger Ty Rattie. The club had placed a waiver claim on Rattie during the early stages of the 2016-17 season, but Carolina was ahead of Edmonton at the time and got the player.

This is someone that the Oilers have had previous interest in, and as a right-shot right winger he somewhat fits an area of need for the club.

In nine NHL games last season, Rattie registered 0-2-2, bumping his career totals to 4-6-10 in 35 NHL tilts. Rattie’s tough season extended to the AHL as well, as he only registered 2-3-5 in 22 games with the Chicago Wolves. It was his worst season in the AHL, as Rattie had previous scored at least 40 points in each of his previous three AHL seasons.

Without a doubt, Rattie needed a change of scenery after his disastrous 2016-17 campaign. However, I think it is important to keep this deal in perspective. Rattie never could crack the Blues’ lineup while with the team, and was beat out by Magnus Paajarvi in a battle last year. This is not an established NHL’er and he shouldn’t be counted on to help the Oilers this season.

As an AHL depth contract, Rattie will be a fine addition for the Oilers. He can help out in Bakersfield and I’d wager that he rebounds to his normal scoring levels at that level this season. He’s a depth piece who will compete in camp and likely end up in the AHL.

The Scouting Report:

Via The Hockey News:

ASSETS:
Has great hands and hockey sense, so he is a natural at putting points on the board. Can play on either side of center. Is especially dangerous on special teams.
FLAWS:
Doesn’t have ideal size (6-0, 178 pounds) for the National Hockey League level, so he must continue to add more bulk in order to maximize his scoring potential.
CAREER POTENTIAL:
Talented winger with a little upside.

UPDATED: Terms of the contract are leaking out, again as per Ryan Rishaug. It’s a one year contract.
