Report: Trade Interest In Curtis Granderson Is Starting to Pick Up

New York Mets v New York Yankees

The New York Mets have traded away most their veterans on expiring contracts, but a few are still remaining in the lineup. The player most likely to be moved is right fielder Curtis Granderson, who could offer some value to a contender as a left handed bat off the bench with the ability to play all three outfield positions. Granderson got off to a slow start this season, batting .122 through May 2nd, which likely depressed his value for a while. Things have improved significantly for Granderson since then, as he has hit .271 with 17 homers and 42 RBI’s to show that there is something left in the tank.

Granderson has also been hot over the last few weeks, starting off August batting .278 with five homers and 10 RBI’s, a production surge that has boosted his trade value. Teams are beginning to show more interest in Granderson, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports, who has already cleared revocable trade waivers. The Mets have until August 31st to trade Granderson to a contender, and all it could take is one injury to create a need for his services. That was the case for Jay Bruce, who drew no interest prior to the trade deadline but became a needed piece for the Cleveland Indians after Michael Brantley landed on the disabled list. The Washington Nationals also have been banged up in the outfield and reportedly had a scout in attendance at last night’s game.

The Mets should definitely try to do right by Granderson and get him into a playoff race if possible. Granderson has been a model citizen since he signed with the Mets four years ago, proving to be the rare free agent signing that has panned out for the franchise. In just under four years with the Mets, Granderson has batted .239 with 94 homers and 293 RBI’s while doing just about anything the team has asked without complaint. Granderson has definitely been a great and underappreciated Met. Hopefully the team is able to reward Granderson for his excellent tenure here by giving him another chance to pursue a World Series ring down the stretch.
