Role Reversal

It’s almost as if God was bragging earlier in the day that he had found a new way to embarrass the Mets. He was going to have a sure RBI fielder’s choice turn into nothing as he was going to have the grounder hit the poor unsuspecting runner who … later in the game … would botch a ground ball which would score two runs for the opponents. It was genius until St. Peter woke God up to tell him he cursed a player on the other team by mistake.

“Balls! Oh well, he’ll be a Met next year anyway.”

Thanks to the momentary lapse of a higher power, the Mets defeated Washington 6-1. Zack Wheeler looked early on like he was going to have another one of “those” outings. But the run scoring grounder that hit Asdrubal Cabrera on the base paths and took away the run saved him. Blessed with a second chance, he righted himself and gutted it out long enough for the bats to wake up against Gio Gonzalez and his band of merry followers. As for Cabrera, his misplay in the seventh which probably should have been an error brought in two runs which were generously credited to Daniel Murphy’s ledger … and put the game away.

And here’s the cherry on top:

If the Mets sweep Washington over the next couple of weeks, they’ll still be a mile behind Atlanta. But they will cause much shame in Washington. Maybe there will be so much embarrassment there will be movements to change the name of two teams in the district.
