Small Ball

Baltimore 493

Ya know … it’s really cute that Justin Turner is producing for the Mets, and that he broke Ron Swoboda’s rookie record for RBI’s in consecutive games … and that we’ve taken to him and supported him and created fan clubs and chase him around like he was a Beatle.  And that’s fine.  He’s the hero and he deserves it.

But there’s a big difference between Justin Turner carrying a ballclub and, say, Jason Bay carrying a ballclub.  Difference being: Bay gets paid to carry it every once in a while.  And he’s not doing it.  Turner has 12 RBI’s in 7 games.  Bay has 7 RBI’s all season, and he’s the damn cleanup hitter.  And he makes cleanup money.  The Mets are flirting with .500 with Justin Turner carrying the club and how long can we really expect that to last?  If Jason Bay could do anything that doesn’t involve the words up, pop, fly, and sac, think where this team would be …

Point being, we like to complain about the ridiculously ease that Yankees hit home runs in their new stadium.  But hey, with two runners on base and a three run deficit … it’s just as easy for the guys in the gray jerseys.  Can’t blame Citi Field for this one, boys and girls.  He had the best chance and the best spot to break out of his slump in the seventh inning against the Yankees and he popped the ball up.  Yeah, Carlos Beltran struck out in front of him in the same spot but Carlos has produced.  Bay is hitting .227 … and he’s been back from injury plenty.  I’d say his free pass is just about up.
