Taking a Look at Tyson Jost

While it’s still early, and the 2016-17 college hockey season is a little over three months away, there are a few things to be excited about. While the University of North Dakota hockey teams lost one of its top forwards, they’ll gain another top flight player to replace Nick Schmaltz. Despite losing Schmaltz, UND will move forward.

Enter Tyson Jost.

The St. Albert, Alberta, Native comes to UND highly regarded and is ranked 16th by the NHL Central Scouting Rank (North America). Last season Jost played with the Penticton Vees of the BCHL and scored 42 goals and 104 points. Jost has been compared to (one of his favorite players) former UND All-American Jonathan Toews. Personally, I think he’s a combination of Schmaltz and Toews.

The Hockey News Ryan Kennedy says: “Those unfamiliar with Jr. A hockey out west may not realize how competitive it is. Jost, a University of North Dakota commit, absolutely demolished the circuit to the tune of more than two points per game.

“He’s a powerful skater with a great shot, excellent hands and man-strength already. An upper-body injury prevented him from fully contributing in the BCHL playoffs, but he recovered in time to play for Canada at the world under-18s, where he led a CHL-dominated team (and the tournament) in scoring, breaking Connor McDavid’s record for points by a Canadian in the tournament.

“Jost oozes confidence and already looks like NHL captain material for the future.”

Jost is expected to be drafted some where in the top-20 of this weekend’s 2016 NHL Entry Draft.
