You gotta hand it to this year’s version of the Mets: They do just enough to keep you interested. With the team needing a victory to avoid a sweep by the Detroit Tigers, Neil Walker pulled a rabbit out of his magic hat with a two-run ninth inning delivering a 3-1 victory to a battered, bruised and bumbling New York Mets organization. It was the Tigers doing the bumbling for once on Sunday as J.D. Martinez ran them out of the eighth inning because Dave Clark gave him a stop sign. Look, better them than us. Better anybody than us.
Funny how a week ago when the Mets traded Dilson Herrera, Sandy Alderson was saying how he could fill second base with Jose Reyes, Gavin Cecchini, Chico Escuela … without once mentioning the guy playing second base currently. But now that Walker is hitting .430 in the last two weeks, the Mets are saying they’ll make at good run at him. Oh well sure, two weeks of hitting like Stan Musial will do that.
Between Walker’s heroics and Jacob deGrom’s brilliance, the Mets remain two games behind Miami for the Sacrificial Lamb for Bud Norris spot. With the Diamondbacks and Padres coming to Citi Field this week, now is the time to make up some ground on Miami as they are at home this week against the Giants. But if the Mets couldn’t hit Anibal Sanchez who came into the game with a 6.26 ERA, then how can we all of a sudden assume dominance? Anything less than 5-2 is a failure, at this point. But do you trust these Mets to make that happen? Even at home? Ask yourself honestly.
