The Fickle Paw of Fate

Seahawks

Well, what exactly do you want from Hisanori Takahashi?  Fifth starters are supposed to do this every once in a while (not once every five days like Livan Hernandez did late last year, or Alay Soler).  At least the bullpen gave the Mets a chance to creep back into the game and set up David Wright with the bases loaded against Phil Coke …

You must understand I’m still bitter about a Subway Series game in 2006 where the Mets had a 4-0 lead and Wright struck out against Ron Villone early in the game, and the Mets went on to lose something like 16-5 (16-7) in what was Soler’s last appearance as a Met because he got demolished.  So whenever Wright bats against a lefty that has Yankee ties, a chill falls upon me and I start to tremble like I’m a teenager watching one of those modern vampire movies … at least that’s what I hear happens to teenagers.  I’m not sure since I really don’t get out much.  So when David Wright faces a Yankee lefty, I cringe not because of Wright, but because of Alay Soler.

Sure enough, my fears were legitimate as Coke struck out Wright, and that was basically your ballgame as the Mets fell to the Tigers (Soler was nowhere to be found, thankfully). Although when Snoop Manuel benched the one non-pitcher who was at the Humane Society today to raise awareness for shelter dogs and cats on a double switch, that was a little bit of bad karma … especially when you’re playing a team named after fierce animals.  So yeah, double switching Jeff Francoeur out was a key moment in the game.

Okay, not really.  But it was an excuse to bring up some good things that the Mets do in the community, as this is “Show up in the Community Week” … or something.  Because I don’t do that enough.  Last season if the Mets had showed up in the community, the community would have thrown garbage and hacked up hairballs on them.  Perhaps, they would have set them on fire.  This season, it’s safe to join the community as Frenchy, Pelfrey, and Frankie played nice with animals.  The Humane Society was even careful not to make Rodriguez pet more than three animals, so I’m sure Randy Niemann was happy about that.  (Yeah, I don’t mention Randy Niemann enough either.)

By the way, was Frankie walking Roscoe the Bed Bug Dog?

(Editor’s note: In the interests of accuracy, that’s “Teammates in the Community Week”, stupid.)
