1 – Steve Kelly
With out a doubt the most controversial draft pick the Oilers have ever made. The 1995 entry draft was held in Edmonton so naturally there was a large Edmonton bias in the crowd that day. When the Oilers stepped up to the podium to make the 6th overall pick the crowd erupted with chants of Doan, Doan, Doan. It was assumed that Glen Sather would select Shane Doan, the Halkirk Alberta native had an impressive junior career and a local connection to the team. Sather surprised everyone when he picked Kelly and Oilers fans haven’t stopped talking about it for the last 20 years. Rightfully so as Doan went on to have what is most likely a hall of fame career playing nearly 1500 games to date and almost 1000 NHL Points. Steve Kelly on the other hand played just 149 games with four different NHL franchises.
