1 – Oilers deal Smyth, start downward spiral

We should have known.

This deal was a sign of things to come. The Oilers were in the midst of contract negotiations with Ryan Smyth and rumour has it, it came down to “only” $100,000. Smyth was sent to the Islanders in exchange for Robert Nilsson, Ryan O’Marra and a first round pick that became Alex Plante. Nilsson had a few good moments but ultimately never materialized. O’Marra was a complete bust, and so was Plante.
