7 – Oilers swap Cole for O’Sullivan

In Steve Tambellini’s first year as GM at the trade deadline, it seemed like he had a solid plan. Tambellini traded the struggling Erik Cole, along with a 5th round pick to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for young sniper Patrick O’Sullivan and a 2nd round pick. The Oilers used the 2nd round pick to bring in Ales Kotalik. The added forward depth helped a little bit, but the kicker here is that the Kings used Erik Cole to bring in future Conn Smythe trophy winner Justin Williams. Patrick O’Sullivan struggled mightily the following season and was dealt for 7th defenseman Jim Vandermeer. O’Sullivan continues to bash the Oilers organization to this day.
