The Oilers Rig Week in Review

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

What a week in Oil Country folks. The Oilers started the week with their first win of the season in a dramatic third period comeback against the New Jersey Devils. The Montreal Canadiens came visiting next and rolled out-of-town with 2 points in a 4-1 victory over the Oilers.

Then came the game last night; I won’t go too in depth with my thoughts from last night’s game but it was another stinker. It all started when we found out that Nail Yakupov was going to watch the game from the press box. The defense can’t prevent scoring chances and Dubnyk wasn’t able to make a save when needed. There were some bright spots in the game as Ryan Smyth scored twice and the team added three other tallies.

That all being said there was a lot to talk about this week;

A post game blog from Monday night’s game versus the Devils from Jeremy “Boris” Wright titled Fickle Lady Luck and a Message from the Future. It’s a great read from Jeremy as always, he talks about the highs and lows during the game and some future expectations.

Tuesday night was our weekly installment of the Oilers Rig Radio Show. Jeff Chapman from CoppernBlue.com joins us. We also introduce a segment called “Yay or Nay” we talked about whether or not the team should keep Devan Dubnyk around. Wow I wonder how that conversation would go today. Listen the archive of the show

Wednesday saw a reaction piece from Alex Thomas about the News Bob McKenzie broke regarding the Oilers trade aspirations, wonder what kind of bold moves might be in the making. If only we would have known how the rest of the week was about to go. You can read that bit of foreshadowing here.

On Thursday I wrote a blog about general manager Craig MacTavish showing his cards so to speak when it came to trying to make a trade and why I don’t think it’s a very good strategy. We also had another very good article from Jeremy Thompson about our new enforcer titled Luke Gazdic…Bandaid, or Scar Tissue about the effectiveness of Gazdic and just what he’s bringing to the team.

Friday we got some more thoughts from Jeremy Wright, this time he wonders why there was no reaction from the team to Lars Ellers dirty hit from behind on Taylor Hall. We also read Alex’s thoughts on an article published by Pierre LeBrun over at ESPN in which an eastern executive criticizes the Oilers players buying in to their coaches system.

Yesterday we had our weekly post from Jackie Dawson about Nail Yakupov’s lack of ice time, it’s like she knew he was going to be benched. Then after the game all hell broke loose with the Oilers losing to the Leafs in a run and gun 6-5 game. We got two opposing articles right after the game on what to do with Devan Dubnyk. Jeremy Thompson’s piece is here and you can read Alex’s take here. They are both great reads from two completely different prospectives.

Take some time while you are relaxing on this fine Thanksgiving Sunday and give some of these a read, I promise you won’t be disappointed.

What’s coming up?

Big things are always happening at theOilersrig.com, this week you will see some of the biggest yet. I can’t get into it much but look for some new and exciting things on the site early next week. We are also going to be doing the very first Oilers Rig Radio Post game Show Tuesday night after the game against Pittsburgh. We will go live at 8:00pm MST; we’ll talk about the game, take your calls and whatever else might come up between now and then. I have a feeling there could be some Bold news out of the Oilers front office shortly.

Happy Thanksgiving and Thanks for Reading
