The One Where Jonathan Papelbon Gets Eaten By Sharks

CANUCKS

So I hear that Sharknado 2 was supposed to debut today, and I kept hearing that it was at Citi Field. So I went to the game yesterday afternoon against Philadelphia. And I didn’t see any damn sharks. I was told the sharks were “coming to Citi Field!” So I expected that they would swoop in from the sky, eat the Phillies, and then be on their merry way. I feel like I got ripped off … kinda.

The Phillies, meanwhile, might have wished that the sharks actually came and ate them, since that would have made their demise quicker and less embarrassing. The Mets clamped teeth on our dysfunctional neighbors to the south by a score of 11-2. Lucas Duda had a long home run late in the game, and was robbed of a second one earlier by Ben Revere (which would have made it the first home run.) But the most impressive Duda moment was the RBI single in the seventh off Mario Hollands … A LEFTY!!! As in the lefties that Lucas Duda couldn’t hit. He looked more like Lucas Boggs. But the home runs are nice too. Finally … finally … Duda is putting his patient approach on an exponential scale as the good pitches he’s getting are being hit hard. And when a man his size hits the ball hard, no field can hold it (except of course center field at Citi when Ben Revere is playing.)

Daniel Murphy also went yard, a three run oppo dinger to give the Mets a 4-1 lead. But my favorite part of the proceedings was the Jeurys Familia RBI single during a five run seventh which put the game away. Jeurys Familia has now become part of the following list: Pitchers I’d Rather See Pinch Hit Instead Of Bobby Abreu. Familia and Jacob deGrom currently occupy the list.

But in addition to the Phillies not getting eaten by sharks, the other disappointing portion of the day was Food Network star Marcus Samuelsson being at the game to throw out the first pitch, and not offering Gary Cohen, Keith Hernandez, and Ron Darling their own Food Network show.

(*Marcus Samuelsson was also at Citi Field for the Citi Kids event, which highlights the importance of financial education. Unfortunately he was not there to discuss Bacon on a Stick with Keith Hernandez.)

Well, you can’t have everything. But you can have Jonathan Papelbon making the walk of shame from the bullpen … perhaps for the final time as a Phillie … after the Mets routed the Phillies.

Will the Phillies be the Phillies after tomorrow? Will the Mets trade Bartolo Colon before he injures himself eating Bacon on a Stick? Tune in tomorrow to find out. I myself will be watching Trade Deadline Mania with some Popeye’s chicken and an Angry Orchard. That might be the most exciting part of the day.
