They have done it! The New York Mets have finally put an end to their season-long six-game losing streak. With two home runs from David Wright and a solo shot from Ike Davis, the Mets trounced the first-place Washington Nationals by a score of 9-5.
R.A. Dickey went seven and one-third innings en route to his 13th victory of the season. R.A. allowed ten hits, struck out five, and walked one in another stellar pitching performance. Dickey still only has one loss on the season.
One could argue that the worst part of today’s game was having to watch that Tito Puente, Jr. commercial about Meningococcal meningitis. The Mets banged out 11 hits and scored all of their runs in the first four innings. Wright’s two run homer in the first inning gave New York an early lead and they did not look back. The Mets added another run in the second, two in the third, and four in the third.
The Nationals scratched out a run in the bottom of the first on a Ryan Zimmerman home run. Washington added a run in the sixth, two in the eighth, and one in the ninth, but it wasn’t quite enough to top the Mets today.
Of course, Bobby Parnell did not want to make it easy for Mets fans. Parnell gave up a lead-off single to Mark DeRosa in the bottom of the ninth and then proceeded to hit Ian Desmond with a pitch. Michael Morse flied out to right and Danny Espinosa struck out looking. Two outs. Roger Bernadina grounded one softly to Justin Turner at second and was able to beat out a close play. 9-5.
And then, something must have clicked in Parnell’s head. “Hey, maybe I SHOULDN’T blow this lead.” Bobby then struck out Sandy Leon to seal the victory.
If there’s one thing that’s better than the rest after today’s game…
- The Mets are only 3.5 GB in the Wild Card. Keep in mind that TWO teams from both the NL and AL make it in on the Wild Card. 3.5 GB with 70 games to play is certainly managable.
And of course, if there’s one thing about today that’s frustrating…
- Bobby Parnell’s adventure in the ninth inning was not reassuring. The Mets bullpen has been shaky at best over the last few games. Hopefully, things will settle down over the next home-stand.
The Mets continue their quest for the Wild Card tomorrow night at Citi Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
