There’s a Penalty Involved: Hakstol Had NHL Coach Clause in His Contract

To quote Allan Harper of Two and a Half Men, “there’s a penalty involved.” Yesterday, Brad Schlossman dropped a little news nugget opon us. We found out that Dave Hakstol‘s contract had an NHL coaching clause. Of course, this started a plethora of questions.

Brad Schlossman, Grand Forks Herald — When negotiating coach Dave Hakstol’s last contract in 2012, Faison put a clause in the contract that specifically outlined a penalty fee if Hakstol left UND for an NHL head coaching position.

The Philadelphia Flyers hired Hakstol to be their head coach last week.

According to Hakstol’s contract, he will owe the school $100,000 for leaving his contract before June 30, 2015, for an NHL head coaching job.

If he were going to a minor league team or taking an assistant coaching job in the NHL, Hakstol would have owed $50,000. If he left for another NCAA team, he would have owed $318,270, which was his base salary for the 2015-16 season.

The main question, who’s going to pay for this fee? I imagine that when the Flyers were after Hakstol, he probably informed Mr. Hextal that he had an out in his current contract. This isn’t chump change that were talking about, this is a  great deal of money. If I was in a negotiation with someone that really wanted my services, I would have asked for some help.

Finally, I don’t think that UND Athletic Director Brian Faison gets enough credit. I believe that this is a great move by the UND AD.
