After last night shellacking at the hands of the Chicago Blackhawks, today Dallas Eakins announce another round of cuts. Also the cuts probably had very little to do with last nights game, The players who are getting sent down will all be regulars in Oklahoma City this season and today is the first day of training camp down there. Let’s have a look at the list;
F – Kale Kessy, Kessy came in and surprised a few people this year. It’s apparent he’s been putting in the work needed to improve his game enough to get some attention. He’s a bottom six role player with size. If he can continue to improve he’ll stand a chance in a few years with the big club.
F – Curtis Hamilton, He stayed longer in camp than I thought he would. I won’t really say he surprised many people but he looked better this year than any of his previous camps, and good thing too because this could be Hamilton’s last year in the organization.
F – Iiro Pakarinen, Free agent signing out of Europe this offseason, there was talk during camp that he would be fighting with Pitlick and Joensuu for the fourth line wing spot. I’m sure he’s disappointed in this assignment but I think he did well and there’s a real chance we see him called up at some point this season.
F – Jason Williams, he’s on an AHL deal so we knew this was coming. Hopefully he can go down and mentor some of those young centers this season, that’s what he was brought in for.
D – Martin Gernat, depending on what happens with Oscar Klefbom and Martin Marincin, this is going to be a huge season for Gernat. He’s set to be on of the top defensemen on the Barons. It’s going to be an interesting watch, to see if he can handle the bigger minutes he’s likely to get.
I have a feeling that the Eakins would have liked to cut a few more players today but with 4 games in the next 6 nights the extras that are still hanging out will be able to help with the fatigue factor.
