Sources tell Bleacher Report that Tyson Barrie has officially filed for arbitration
— Adrian Dater (@adater) July 5, 2016
Tuesday afternoon Colorado Avalanche defenceman Tyson Barrie filed for salary arbitration. This is interesting to the Oilers and their fans for many reasons. The offensive defenceman has been rumored to be on the Av’s trade block for a while now and the Oilers are rumored to have interest. In fact, Tyson Barrie rumors might be the most talked about subject around Oilers Nation right now.
Barrie filing for arbitration puts a few wrinkles into things. For starters, there is some confusion on whether or not Barrie can still be traded until either he signs a contract with the Avs or the arbitration hearing is completed. After reading through Article 12 (Salary Arbitration) of the CBA, and falling asleep twice then drinking a six pack of Red Bulls, I learned that the arbitrators ruling must be double spaced and in the Times New Roman font. Seriously.
It was a huge waste of time because I was later pointed to General Fanager’s tweets from Tuesday afternoon.

Players with arbitration filed, hearings scheduled, verdicts due, etc can all be traded. Arbitration does not provide trade protection.

So there you have it. Once I saw this tweet I wasn’t going to write this article. But I’d put so much time into the CBA that I felt like I owed it to myself. Sorry.
Barrie is a hell of a player, and many pundits are saying that the Oilers should move heaven and earth to try and acquire him. I believe that he could be had and would be a great addition to the Oilers blue line. Barrie is everything the Oilers hoped Justin Schultz would be. To have a true puck moving defenceman that can play 2/3rds of every powerplay is something this team still badly needs.
Barrie is 24 years old and that would fit seemlessly into the young blueline that Peter Chiarelli is trying to build. Thing about having Oscar Klefbom, Adam Larsson, Tyson Barrie, Brandon Davidson and Darnell Nurse all 24 or younger. That is one hell of a pool going into the future. Of course there is the expansion draft to consider but I’m not worried about that right now.
The Cost
Well if Adam Larsson costs you Taylor Hall you have to think that Barrie would be more. Except that Barrie is an RFA whom it seems really isn’t in his teams long term plans. There have been many rumors, I’ll list what I’ve heard but with the caveat that I have no sources and can’t confirm truth to any of the trade proposals listed.
Pouliout, Yakupov and a 1st round pick for Barrie. This is a deal I wouldn’t be to opposed to and apparently was turned down by the Avs. The Oilers would be losing their 2nd line LW and, as of right now, the 2nd or 3rd RW. But gaining Barrie would ease the pain.
RNH for Barrie straight across. Well after the Hall trade this seems like a likely scenario. I wouldn’t be overly pleased with this move, we’ve been bitching about center depth for years. Now that the Oilers have that depth if I were them I wouldn’t be so quick to discount it.
Bob Stauffer hinted on his Oilers Now show that the price may be dropping however. On his show Bob was mentioning a lottery protected first round pick. He did also mention that a three way trade between the Ducks, Avs and Oil involving Fowler to the Avs, Barrie to the Oilers and a package to the Ducks from the Oilers might get the job done. I’ve got as much confidence in the a trade like that being pulled off as I do of convincing the Missus that a three way would be something she’d enjoy!
Either way it’s going to and interesting time leading up to Barrie’s arbitration hearing at the end of the month. I can’t believe that Chiarelli is happy yet with his defencemen. Something has to give, and if Chia can get Barrie without having to give up an Eberle or Nuge then I’ll be quite happy. Until then keep the Tyson Barrie rumors coming
