What A Country

I wish I could live in a country where I could suck for a year and get rewarded with a salary of $375,000.

Oh wait, I do live in that country. Because that isn't Ike Davis' salary … that's his raise! Davis, despite spending almost the entire season under the Francoeur line, and spending some time in Las Vegas, Davis came to terms with the Mets on a one year deal to avoid arbitration.

A-meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerica, A-meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerica …

Hey, this really is a great country. Think about it, Ruben Tejada stunk, and his salary doubled. Within a day, two players that were thought to be complete goners in an effort to upgrade both positions both … got raises for their "performances". (We could blame Jordany Valdespin for this somehow, but we all know he was nowhere near the area … because he was busy throwing his helmet at a little league coach and tearing his achilles while leaving his winter league team.)

We're getting perilously close to spring training, which means we're getting perilously close to the point where we could stop saying "there's plenty of off-season to go" and start saying "this looks like its going to be our roster". Bringing back these guys proves that we're going to go into 2014 with more similarities to 2013 than we thought possible. Perhaps it's the right move. Sandy Alderson absolutely refuses to sell low on anybody, and that's to his credit. But now Davis and Tejada have to do their part and actually perform and get some value back.

Or not … because as proven this year, they could suck at their jobs and get raises. What a country.
