Where Do We Go from Here?

By now, most of you know that the University of North Dakota has a new nickname, the university will soon have a new logo. Of course, not everyone is going to be happy. Everyone grieves in their own way.

After years of heated, emotional debate. And after going three seasons being simply “North Dakota”, UND will move forward as the Fighting Hawks. We all knew this day was coming.

Yeah, I know, some of you are rolling your eyes.

One of the biggest concerns that I have seen; a fair number of UND fans are unhappy that UND will join the ranks of roughly 29 other Division I institutions that have some form of Hawks in their nickname.

This past weekend, we just played our NCHC rival the RedHawks. Next time the two teams play, that will be a mouth full for our radio and television guys.  I bet in the end, our Hawks logo has the potential to better than theirs.

Nonetheless, yesterday it was very interesting reading social media. On Twitter, fans posted their reaction to the announcement. The reaction of mixed. Some fans were very unhappy while others seemed relieved that UND was moving on.

I would like to remind the folks that aren’t familiar with the US Military, they have a tradition of naming their fighters after birds of prey like the F-15 Eagle and F-16 Fighting Falcon.

As I said earlier in another post earlier this fall. (Was quoted by Puck Daddy)

I know I have said this 100 times. I love the Fighting Sioux nickname. I also realize that this fight should have taken place about 5-7 years ago. It seems like some have been late to the party. The Fighting Sioux nickname is gone and not coming back. If UND had refused to change the Fighting Sioux nickname, there’s no way that UND would be able to host an NCAA regional.

I am pro-Fighting Sioux nickname, I will always be. I am worn out with the argument surrounding the nickname. I am (reluctantly) ready to move on, I will vote for a nickname in October. That being said, I will always wear my Fighting Sioux gear with pride when the opportunity arises. Last Wednesday, I wore a golf shirt with the Fighting Sioux logo on it to the hockey presser. I didn’t even realize I was wearing it. Just came out of the wash that way.

Where do we go from here? Do we move on as a fan base and get behind our sports teams no matter what they’re called? Or do we continue to be at each other’s throats? It’s not just about hockey, it’s about all of UND’s Division I sports. #rolltribe

P.S. I also have some advice for UND fans, do with it as you chose. There’s been a lot said on social media and in the news about UND’s nickname process. It’s been a long journey. This is our university, our team, our history. Who cares what they think. Don’t take the bait from trolls/fans of other teams that have no intention other than to goad you into a tireless, senseless debate.

Nodak nation.
