Yesterday, news broke that Mike Eaves had fired his assistant coaches Gary Shuchuk and Matt Walsh. This is going to be an interesting spring to say the least. There are a lot of unhappy Badgers fans that thought Eaves should be the one fired.
Andy Baggot, Madison.com — Like Eaves, whose coaching tenure in Madison began in 2002, Shuchuk and Walsh are UW graduates who own NCAA championship rings from playing for the Badgers.
Eaves acknowledged the firings cast Shuchuk and Walsh as scapegoats.
“This falls under the category of taking extreme measures to make sure that we get out of this and get the program back where it needs to be,” Eaves said.
During an interview in his Kohl Center office late last month, Eaves said he wanted both Shuchuk and Walsh to return and planned no changes to his staff outside of replacing Zach Remiker, the director of hockey operations who’s leaving after spending 12 years with the program to go into private business.
Obviously something changed.
