Yakimov Recalled, Klefbom Demoted

The Edmonton Oilers made a couple of notable roster transactions this afternoon, ahead of tomorrow’s game with the Los Angeles Kings.

Joining the big team

Bogdan Yakimov has been recalled from the OKC Barons. The 6’5″ center will be looking to build on the impressive training camp he had with the parent squad.

Since the Barons are only 1 game into their season, there isn’t much of note to mention about Yakimov outside of a 2 minute holding the stick penalty. Neal Livingston of Tend the Farm had him listed as lining up between Moroz and Pinizzotto on the 3rd line. The motivation for recalling him stems from the conspicuous absences of Eberle, Nugent-Hopkins, and Purcell from practice today. Eakins had this to say…

With the Barons next game not coming until Friday night, having the sizable pivot available as a slot-in for the upcoming 3 games in 4 nights seems the prudent move. If any 2 of the 3 forwards mentioned are unable to go, big Yak could very likely make his NHL debut. Will Acton is currently the 13th forward and would likely be the first option ahead of Yakimov.

Leaving the big team

To make room for Yakimov, Oscar Klefbom was assigned to OKC. At this very early point of the season we have seen Klefbom as a healthy scratch. With the way the first two games played out, the Oilers gaining 1 of a possible 4 points, and if things continue the way they have in the Oilers’ own end, I don’t think anyone will be surprised to see Klefbom back soon. Many have questioned the back end roster decisions of Eakins. Klefbom, while shy on experience and offence, could provide a different look than some of the current defenders. If the demotion lasts, depending on the Oilers forward injuries, Klefbom will surely see top pairing minutes for the OKC Barons.

The next 3 games are very important. The 0-1-1 start to the year will be a little more palatable if they can pick up 3 or 4 of the next 6 points. If they don’t manage to do that, the rattling din of discontent coming from the fan base and media could quickly turn into significant noise.
