I guess this is going to be the new thing now … take as many pictures of David Wright looking like he wants to cry so that when it’s time to write that “Will Wright Leave” story we have plenty in stock. I didn’t make this collage to take these photos out of context. But I never saw so many of them taken in one night before. And on the night he hit his 200th home run, no less. Wright looks like he could care less. And while it’s an admirable achievement, it’s hard to jump up and down about it when the Mets have lost their fifth straight game to a minor league team … this time the Corpus Christi Hooks.
The Astros were 7-43 in their last 50 games. The teams they were the most frequently compared to were the 1899 Cleveland Spiders, and the 1962 New York Mets. Their starting pitcher, Jordan Lyles, was 2-10 going into Friday night with a 5.70 ERA and a WHIP of 1.52. The Mets, of course, lost. Made Lyles look like a star in the process.
The exasperated look on Wright’s face? I know it. I live it. I have it. Remember when your mother used to tell you to stop making that face because it’s going to freeze and stay that way? This might be what we’re seeing here. I hope that when Wright is busy deciding where he wants to spend the rest of his life, that this isn’t the night he remembers. I hope these aren’t the images he flashes back to. If it is, he’s gone.
Wright deserves better than this. Much better. And if you’re reading this, you do too. Because if you’re reading this then you’re one of the few that still gives a crap about this team, and loves this team regardless of the outcome. YOU deserve better than what you’re getting out of this team … what you’ve gotten from this team since Tom Glavine took the mound for the final time at Shea Stadium. You deserve better. I hope that if you’re ever in the position where you can demand more, that you do. You may love them no matter what. But don’t ever, ever accept what this team is giving you right now, because it’s completely unacceptable. How do you lose five straight to the Rockies and Astros and then be able to present a cogent argument about how you’re still fighting, and trying, and haven’t quit? Perception is reality, right?
You deserve better. Your third baseman deserves better. He at least deserves a smile. Though his face might be frozen like that for the length of his contract.
