There’s no quit in the Ravens as they are presently constituted and you have to give John Harbaugh and his staff credit for that as they climb to 4-7…
With half of their original roster on IR, somehow the Ravens hung on and clawed their way to a regulation victory in Cleveland despite a mix of miscues and missed assignments which should have allowed the Browns to bury them.
It came down to a potential game-winning 51-yard FG attempt by the Browns with about 3 seconds to go after the Ravens nearly shat the game away with one of QB Matt Schaub’s worst throws of the night.
Somehow the just-activated 6-7 DE Brent Urban got his hand on the kick… he deflected it and DB Will Hill collected it, got blockers down the left sideline, and ended the game with a walk-off “Kick 6” TD !!
You rarely see something like that. It’s special for the Ravens in a lost season. It means the effort is still there and Harbaugh has something to point to and build upon for next year— it’s the Ravens’ way, said Harbaugh after the game, “we never quit”…
Safety Will Hill returned a blocked field goal 64 yards for a touchdown as time expired, giving the Baltimore Ravens a 33-27 win Monday night over the luckless Cleveland Browns, who lost their sixth straight game along with losing starting quarterback Josh McCown to a shoulder injury. 2nd backup QB Austin Davis nearly won the game for the Browns after McCown was knocked out of the contest with a banged-up throwing shoulder.
Cleveland’s Travis Coons lined up to kick a potential game-winning 51-yard field goal with 3 seconds to go, but it was deflected by defensive end Brent Urban, who was playing his first NFL game for the injury-riddled Ravens (4-7). Hill scooped it up and rumbled down the left sideline for an improbable win, stunning a Cleveland (2-9) crowd which moments earlier was ready to celebrate.
Ravens quarterback Matt Schaub, making his first start since 2013, threw two touchdown passes. He also threw two picks— the second one seemingly would cost the Ravens the game.
McCown injured his right shoulder in the fourth quarter after being pressured to the turf by the Ravens pass rush and was replaced by Austin Davis, whose 42-yard TD pass to Travis Benjamin tied it with 1:47 remaining. Cleveland fans booed the appearance of Austin Davis because they wanted to see Johnny Manziel instead— but Davis damn near won the game for the browns.
It was a game which seemingly the Ravens had in hand with a nice pass rushing performance from DE Chris Canty and OLB Elvis Dumervil… and a solid defensive performance from defensive tackle Brandon Williams and ILB C.J. Mosley.
But the Browns have some talented guys who are resilient, too.
Ultimately Matt Schaub did okay at QB— but in his quest to manage the game, he colored outside of the lines a few times, and it nearly cost him the game.
He had an early cushion from the recently signed punt returner Kaelin Clay.
Clay wasted no time repaying the Baltimore Ravens for giving him an opportunity, returning a punt 82 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter of Monday night’s game against the Cleveland Browns.
Clay scored his first touchdown on his fourth career punt return, which put Baltimore ahead early. This was just his second game with the Ravens, who picked up the rookie from Utah off the Detroit Lions’ practice squad.
The Ravens had gone through four punt returners this season before signing Clay, and they added him after Jeremy Ross fumbled twice in previous games.
Clay’s punt return for a touchdown was the first one for the Ravens since Tandon Doss had one in September 2013, when Baltimore went against the Houston Texans and their starting quarterback Matt Schaub, now with the Ravens. It’s also tied for the fifth-longest punt return in team history.
But it turned into a slugfest from there.
McCown injured his collarbone in the fourth quarter and was replaced by Austin Davis, whose 42-yard TD pass to Travis Benjamin tied it with 1:47 remaining.
The Browns appeared to be in position to pull out a comeback win after cornerback Tramon Williams intercepted Schaub with 50 seconds left at Baltimore’s 46.
But as Cleveland attempted to get closer for Coons, Davis wasted valuable time because of a communication issue with the sideline and the QB couldn’t get out of bounds after a scramble, forcing the Browns to call a timeout.
But as Coons, who was 18 for 18 this season, lined up for his long kick, it appeared the Ravens were on their way to another close loss. All 11 of Baltimore’s games have been decided by less than eight points, and the Ravens have been on the wrong side of most of those.
However, Urban got some penetration on the line and got his hand on Coon’s low kick. Hill took it from there, finding his way to the end zone.
Schaub finished 20 of 34 for 232 yards and his first TD’s since Dec. 23, 2013.
McCown, who has played hurt most of this season and was only starting because Johnny Manziel got benched, was 21 of 38 for 212 yards and a TD.
Cleveland linebacker Karlos Dansby picked off Schaub and returned it 52 yards for a TD in the third quarter to give the Browns a 20-17 lead, the first time they’ve been ahead in a game since the first half against Arizona on Nov. 1 — a span of more than 173 minutes.
But they weren’t up for long as Schaub countered with his second scoring pass, a 15-yarder to Kamar Aiken to put the Ravens ahead 24-20 with 5:30 left in the third quarter.
McCown took several hard shots in the second half and went to the sideline in obvious pain. He returned to the field, but dropped to the ground after an incompletion, forcing the Browns to turn to Davis, who made eight starts for St. Louis last season but was getting his first action for Cleveland.
Manziel was benched by Browns coach Mike Pettine after the second-year quarterback broke a promise by going out and partying during Cleveland’s bye week.
