2010 CSS Final Rankings: An overview of the potential NHL draftees with movement tracker.

The U.S. Census is something is done every 10 years (and it is required by law to participate in) and tracks the changes in America’s population.  Congress takes that data and uses it decides how to allocate money for various programs all over the nation.  It also uses it to re-draw congressional district lines for the House of Representatives and researchers also use that data to see the face of America’s everchanging population.  The proces of re-drawing of congressional district lines is called gerrymandering.  It is a vital and necessary process for our government and citizens are encouraged to participate in what has become a costly ad campaign, somewhere in the realm of billions of dollars but enough about politics and government.  The NHL has sort of a census of its own that it does twice each year as its Central Scouting Service evaluates potential draftees for the upcoming Entry Draft this summer and for those of us who do not have an unlimited amount of time to go drive around and evaluate all these prospects ourselves its a tool to see what players whose stock is rising or falling.  Central Scouting is just one evaluation service, as International Scouting Service, and a few other publications (McKeen’s and the Hockey News for example) also make their own lists.  NHL teams themselves employ their own scouts or in the case of the Buffalo Sabres, video collectors to evaluate players and come up with their own lists to fill specific prospect needs for their organization.  The process is highly subjective but there usually some universal truths that can be gathered as well.

For some players the up and down movement can be traced to specific performances or actions; I’ll give you two examples from this year’s draft class.  Kirill Kabanov certainly did not impress scouts too much when he abruptly decided to bolt from his Moncton team late in the season to return to his native Russia.  Kabanov was touted by many (and still is) to be one of the most skilled players available in the draft yet after dropping from 15th to 31st in the Final Rankings reflects the disappointment over such questionable and selfish decision.  If you’re a General Manager and your picking in the middle portions of the 1st round do you take a chance on Kabanov knowing that if he is unhappy he will not hesitate to leave for his homeland?  It may not be fair, but Kabanov’s move already makes GM’s hesitant to draft Russian-born players due to the ‘Hockey Cold War’ that exists between the NHL and the Kontinental Hockey League will make them that much more skittish despite the tremendous skill that player may possibly provide.  On the other end of the spectrum was the meteoric rise of University of Wisconsin defenseman, John Ramage (the son of long-time NHL’er Rob Ramage) who jumped 56 spots from 187th at the Mid-term assessment to 131st which no doubt was due in part to a solid performance at this year’s World Junior Championships as well as stellar stay-at-home play through the latter part of the NCAA season.  However, the rankings also show that a strong finish to a season may not help at all.  Minnetonka’s Andrew Prochno had an outstanding state tournament nearly leading the Skippers to a state title but in the end the small but skilled offensive defenseman dropped 50 spots from 155th to 205th.  Lastly, as E.J. Maguire and other scouts will tell you its not always about the statistics you put up but rather what they believe a player’s potential (or to use a scouting buzzword, their ‘upside’) may be, even after a disappointing season or one filled with injury a player may not be hindered in the rankings because of it.  Prince George’s Brett Connolly even moved up in the final assessment, rising from 4th to 3rd amongst North American skaters despite only playing 16 games and registering just 19 points as he was plagued by injuries.  Yet if a guy can move up in the standings when he’s played so few games could that be an indictment on the other players available in this draft?  To CSS that may be, but is also why any fan hoping to put together a solid mock draft should look at consulting multiple prospect lists.

Overall, based upon the rise and fall of prospects in the lists for North American Skaters, North American Goalies, European Skaters and European Goaltenders I’ve come to the following general conclusions.

1.  For North American skaters there is a fair amount of stability in the rankings from 1 to 20, meaning there is only a modest amount of rise and fall meaning there is little debate between the Central Scouting evaluators, but after that it becomes more erratic making the reliability of the rankings more suspect.

2.  For European skaters there is good stability from 1 to 14 but after that it is even more chaotic than the North American skater rankings as they were some players who rose very significantly and those who dropped precipitously.  There is also a huge portion of players listed in the final rankings that were not evaluated in the mid-term rankings.

3.  Goaltending rankings for both North Americans and Europeans stayed rather stagnant from the Mid-Term assessment.  Not a ton of movement especially in the top 10 selections for both.  The Europeans again saw some un-rated Mid-term players on the final CSS list.

With the Wild’s mediocre seasons, I’ve found myself focusing more of my post-season energy on the draft and hopefully Minnesota’s loss of the post-season is your gain as I help add a bit of color and order to the Central Scouting’s Final rankings which they publish each spring.  Hopefully this 2010 NHL Entry Draft Prospect tracker which traces those players who have moved up and down in the rankings from Central Scouting’s Mid-Term rankings is a useful tool for you fans out there who love to compile your own draft lists and mock drafts so you can track the trajectory of these players you may be mulling over as the league gets closer to draft day.

So how will this work?  I will include the CSS Final ranking in the appropriate color (Blue, Purple, Green, Orange and Red) as well as the CSS Mid-term ranking in parentheses so you can see just how much change took place.  Here are how to read the colors

Blue ~ For players who dropped 5 or more rankings (fading fast)

Purple ~ For players who dropped between 2 to 4 rankings (mild drop)

Green ~ For players who were +/- 1 ranking (very stable)

Orange ~ For players who were rose between 2 to 4 rankings (mild boost)

Red ~ For players who rose 5 or more rankings (strong finish)

Black ~ For players who were not rated in CSS’s Mid-Term rankings (late bloomer / wild card)
