I always had high hopes for Anthony Allen's carer in Baltimore. He was and is the classic "Jack of All Trades"… running back, receiver, pass-pro blocking back, special teams…
6-1, 230… good speed.. Drafted out of Georgia Tech in the 7th round in 2011…
Now he is gone.
Allen got the news on Friday. He took it well.
I think he knows he'll get picked up by another team pretty quickly. At least I hope he will…
At least he has that Super Bowl ring.
The Ravens announced a round of roster cuts Friday afternoon but still have to make more moves to get down to the 53-man limit by late Saturday afternoon, the league deadline for finalizing rosters.
The team waived 11 players, including veteran running back Anthony Allen and quarterback Caleb Hanie, and placed rookie linebacker D.J. Bryant on injured reserve after he suffered a knee injury in Thursday night’s preseason finale in St. Louis.
The moves thinned the Ravens’ roster from 75 to 63 players, but they need to make 10 more moves to get down to the league limit.
Here are the players who were cut Friday:
Anthony Allen, RB, Georgia Tech
Marc Anthony, CB, California
Nigel Carr, LB, Alabama State
Delone Carter, RB, Syracuse
Brandon Copeland, LB, Pennsylvania
Dayne Crist, QB, Kansas
Jordan Devey, T, Memphis
Rogers Gaines, T, Tennessee State
Alex Silvestro, TE, Rutgers
Reggie Stephens, C, Iowa State
Caleb Hanie, QB, Colorado State
The releases of Allen and Carter likely hands a roster spot to Bobby Rainey, the second-year running back who performed well in the preseason. Allen was a key special teams performer on the Ravens’ Super Bowl team, but he fumbled on the goal line Thursday night, and Carter – obtained in a trade just last week – did little with his opportunity. Rainey, meanwhile, scored two touchdowns Thursday night and compiled more than 100 all-purpose yards.
The release of Hanie means the Ravens likely will go with just Joe Flacco and Tyrod Taylor at quarterback for the third straight year.
I think they're gonna miss Anthony Allen's occasional big plays on special teams…..
But no worries. The Ravens love Bobby Rainey. Maybe he will fill the shoes of the departed Allen and then some…
In the meantime, more big cuts to come….
See you Saturday…
