Hockey hair. It comes in all cuts, styles, and on occasion, colors, especially during the Minnesota State Hockey Tournament. The professional comparison are the playoff beards that have almost become common place in the National Hockey League. Since growing a beard isn’t always physically possible for the adolescent, they generally resort to the next best thing, hockey hair.
The above video is a top ten of hockey hair as witnessed at this year’s Minnesota State Hockey Tournament. I personally get a kick out of the video creator using stick tape on the various combs and hair picks in between showing the kids who he deems has the best hockey hair. It’s simply a combination that one wouldn’t naturally think of, and truly it’s quite creative. Clearly the guy who put this together has a sense of humor. However, the best part is the creative use of slow motion. Sports fans are used to slow motion replay during the course of a sporting event. What one doesn’t expect is the use of slow motion replay to show off a player’s hockey hair. I don’t know about you, but hockey seems to be the one place where it is still acceptable to have feathered, Leif Garrett 70’s hair. It was that particular style where slow motion was best utilized. And yes, there was even the stereotypical mullet in the top ten. Seriously, one could ask what is hockey without a mullet or two?
I suppose you’re wondering where the heck this is going. Honestly, I don’t really know myself. What I do know is that when the season has gone as it has lately, I tend to start tuning out. It’s great gems like this and the recent story about the organization Defending the Blue Line on the NBC Nightly News that are keeping me sane during this turn of fortune for the Minnesota Wild. I suppose I should be happy that they’ve won their past two games. However it’s hard to be happy when that happiness does not equal a playoff appearance. Because of how this season has turned out, I warn you that my remaining game previews might be a bit more on the random side. One can only hope that team management gives all Wild writers, both mainstream and those in the blogosphere, give us serious topics to discuss this off-season. Those serious topics should include things like great draft picks (hopefully this is the case that we’ve finally shed some dead weight in their scouting department), contract negotiations, and free agent acquisitions. Of course the latter two are hampered quite a bit by the tight salary cap bind that they’re still in. Lucky us.
