Ravens looked weak in 40-17 loss to Eagles…

I know it’s just the second game of the preseason, but something was missing for the Ravens Saturday night, and I don’t mean just their top draft pick receiver, half of their offensive line, and a pass rush of any consequence.

They played flat as a group. No individual gaffe stands out. There is nothing to write about, really. The Ravens were so sluggish and the game was so slow and uneventful for them, there is literally nothing to write about.

As Jamison Hensley summed it up in his ESPN.com report, “The focus now is the health of the Baltimore offensive line. The Ravens watched three more offensive linemen (left tackle Eugene Monroe, right tackle James Hurst and offensive tackle De’Ondre Wesley) go down in the first half of Saturday’s game against the Eagles. That is underscored by the fact that Baltimore didn’t dress six offensive linemen entering the game.”

Yeah, to add injury to insult, the Ravens are suddenly a team with health problems and very questionable depth.

Joe Flacco threw interceptions on his first two drives and the rest of the Ravens (1-1) didn’t play much better against a team they practiced with the previous three days. Flacco finished 3 of 7 for 23 yards in three series. The Ravens opened the game with some nice running plays and good blocking, but then Joe either overthrew his targets or the receivers cut their routes short—I guess we’ll never know for sure, since Joe always takes the blame. Walter Thurmond intercepted Flacco’s deep pass that was tipped by cornerback Nolan Carroll. Byron Maxwell then grabbed Flacco’s overthrown pass to set up a short scoring drive.

Maybe the biggest letdown by the Ravens was their commission of about 20 penalties, many of them procedure mistakes. True, their phone lines were down for much of the 1st half—but so were the phones of the Eagles.

“I just told the team we’ll learn from this,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said.

RB Justin Forsett had 29 yards rushing. WR Steve Smith Sr. caught one pass for 6 yards. Second-rounder TE Maxx Williams caught three passes for 25 yards.

The rest of the game was about getting work for the backups. Matt Schaub was 11 of 18 for 115 yards. Bryn Renner put some nice action on tape for his resume—he was 15 of 21 for 158 yards and two TDs.
