The Dallas Cowboys didn’t want the Baltimore Ravens to get their hands on Jalen Ramsey.
Well, maybe Jerry Jones just wanted Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott. But the Ravens had their eye on the Florida State defensive back, but were unable to make the two-spot jump ahead of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Clifton Brown of CSNMidAtlantic.com provided context:
The Ravens tried trading up to No. 4 with the Cowboys in Round 1 to take defensive back Jalen Ramsey of Florida St., an NFL source said, confirming an ESPN report. In return, the Ravens were offering the sixth pick and one of their fourth-round picks.
Brown goes on to reveal that the Cowboys were afraid another team would trade up to fifth and steal Elliott, so they stood pat and got their guy.
The Ravens wound up taking Notre Dame offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley, not a bad consolation prize considering the team needed help better protecting quarterback Joe Flacco. But it’s hard not to wonder what could have been, as Ramsey is a can’t-miss prospect and the Baltimore defense hasn’t been the same since Ed Reed hung up the cleats.
Alas, Ramsey will suit up for the Jaguars and form a strong unit with last year’s No. 3 pick, Dante Fowler. Dallas got its DeMarco Murray successor. And Baltimore continues to trend more toward an offensive-minded approach, for better or worse.
Sorry, Ravens fans.
