I’m blown away by the news of Curtis Painter’s getting the axe from the Ravens…
I seriously thought Painter had outplayed backup QB Tyrod Taylor over the course of the preseason…
Curtis Painter has left the building…despite what I saw as a superior pocket presence and a supremely more accurate arm compared to Tyrod Taylor…
These cuts never cease to amaze me.
Former Indianapolis Colts starting quarterback Curtis Painter headlined the list of 16 players waived by the Baltimore Ravens on Friday as the team trimmed its roster down to the mandatory 53-man limit.
Also waived by Baltimore was running back Anthony Allen, a seventh-round pick by the team in last year’s draft, who lost out in a battle with 2012 third- rounder Bernard Pierce, and undrafted rookie Bobby Rainey, to be the primary backups to All-Pro Ray Rice.
The Ravens placed six players on injured reserve as well on Friday, including rookie wide receiver and sixth-round draft choice Tommy Streeter.
A sixth-round selection of the Colts in 2009, Painter spent two seasons as Peyton Manning’s backup before starting eight games in place of the injured star during the 2011 campaign. The Purdue product lost all eight outings while throwing for 1,541 yards and six touchdowns with nine interceptions along with a 54.3 percent completion percentage.
Painter was released by Indianapolis in March and signed by the Ravens a month later, but the team decided to keep only Joe Flacco and Tyrod Taylor at quarterback— and the offseason pickup apparently sealed his fate by throwing three interceptions in Thursday’s preseason finale at St. Louis.
Streeter sprained his foot during the preseason and was sent to IR along with tight end Matt Balasavage (ankle), running back Damien Berry (neck/shoulder), offensive lineman Justin Boren (foot), linebacker Ricky Brown (head) and tight end Bruce Figgins (shoulder).
Along with Painter and Allen, the Ravens waived safeties Omar Brown and Cyhl Quarles, inside linebackers Josh Bynes and Nigel Carr, offensive linemen Jack Cornell, Cord Howard, Antoine McClain and veteran Tony Wragge, wide receivers Dorian Graham and Logan Payne, nose tackles Nicholas Jean-Baptiste and Ishmaa’ily Kitchen, defensive end Terrence Moore and outside linebacker Chavis Williams.
This also means that Sergio Kindle made the team at OLB… and is now officially a Raven…
Will wonders never cease?
