The first of the Ravens 17 (or seven, depending on who you listen to) unrestricted free agents has re-signed with the Ravens, as Pro Bowl kicker Billy Cundiff has agreed to a five year, $15 million contract. First reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN and later confirmed by Jamison Hensley of the Sun. Cundiff was awesome for the Ravens this year, with an NFL record-tying 40 touchbacks, and he connected on 26 of 29 field goals this season as well. Cundiff came to the team in the middle of 2009, when Steven Hauschka was sent to a deserted island somewhere after blowing several huge kicks, including what would have been a game winner in Minnesota. Cundiff beat out former Bengal and current Patriot Shayne Graham for the starting spot in preseason. One Pro Bowl season later, it looks like the Ravens made the right decision. $3 million a year isn’t a massive investment, and I’m hoping that the Ravens don’t lose any flexibility with any of their other free agents after signing the first one of them, and having it be the kicker of all people. Time will tell.
