Seahawks CB Richard Sherman is the best cover corner in the NFL. But sometimes he gets a bit caught up in the moment and his emotions get the best of him.
And in the NFC Championship Game’s final moments, that’s exactly what happened, as he and 49ers WR Michael Crabtree went toe-to-toe with a trip to Super Bowl XLVIII on the line.
With just 30 seconds remaining in the game, the Niners were within striking distance and on the Seattle 18-yard line—down just six points and looking to take the lead. And with two timeouts remaining, maybe a designed Colin Kaepernick run or a draw play was the best option here. The 49ers then could’ve called a timeout, and likely would’ve been looking at a 1st-and-goal situation, with enough time to run three or four plays, and a timeout to spare if things went haywire.
Instead, they decided to throw at Sherman, which probably wasn’t the best idea. It was the first time they targeted the shutdown CB all game, and the result wasn’t a surprise. Kaepernick threw a pass to the corner of the end zone, where Sherman was covering Crabtree, with help from LB Malcolm Smith. Sherman made a phenomenal play on the ball while backpedaling, tipping it to Smith who came down with the interception. It was a good throw, too, and was just inches away from falling into Crabtree’s hands for the go-ahead touchdown.
Instead, Sherman made the play and saved the Seahawks season. But it was happened afterward that mattered.
Sherman was interviewed by Erin Andrews, and literally exploded with emotions, calling Crabtree “sorry” among other things.
He’s a great player, but he might want to keep his mouth shut. Otherwise, this might happen again after a game.
